SoCal - Beach Town Sunset
Spending an evening in Encinitas with a California Burrito and a view
I should’ve taken a picture of the burrito I was eating while overlooking the beach at sunset for this one. Once again, missing out on the food pics. Early Instagram would be very upset with me.
The whole purpose of my trip through Southern California was because I was attending a work conference in Carlsbad. On the final night of the conference a colleague asked what I was doing for dinner and I replied something to the effect of “finding a California burrito and eating it near the beach” and he thought that was oddly specific (it is). Years ago, the first time I went to San Diego a sushi chef in La Jolla told me “everyone will tell you to get the fish tacos, and you should, they’re good, but you really need to find a California burrito” then he gave me recommendations for where to get one.
So, after my responsibilities at the conference were done I grabbed some cameras and headed to the coast, I found a spot called Raul’s Shack, and it seemed like exactly the kind of place I wanted to grab a burrito from. Encinitas is a small beach town and it was pretty magical to walk down the street, and get to the end of the street to the large drop-off to the beach and the ocean. I walked down the beach a bit, took some pictures, and then circled back to get that oh so specific California burrito (it’s a steak burrito with fries in it, and you should try one if you get the chance).
I ordered my burrito, and of course salsa and a lime Jarritos soda to go with it. I walked back to an overlook I found on my initial exploration and enjoyed my burrito on a bench while the sun went down over the ocean.
It was the peaceful dinner I needed after a few long days presenting, focusing, and networking at a conference. I needed some solitude. Luckily the next stop on my tip would have plenty of solitude, as the next morning I was leaving for Joshua Tree on my own. Before we get to that part, I’ll leave you all with my dinner view and the sounds of the beach drifting up to me.

These photos are fantastic and I’m jealous of your trip but not gonna lie, I wanna see that burrito more than anything 🤤
